Since I am spending the day with Ty and Tess at the Aberfoyle antique market I am not sure how to approach the food. I start the day with 1 cup of Kashi granola with almond milk and I put a bottle of water and a banana in my shopping bag. I am hoping that the restaurant on the grounds has something I can eat. I find that now I have to think ahead like that if I want to try and stay on track. At least the weather is finally feeling like spring/summer and being able to be outside and walking around is a great treat.
I get picked up and I mention to Tyler that the market is only open til 4 and that there are 150 dealers. He shrugs and says we don't have to see each one... I'm like what of course we do..duh. I have a couple items in my mind that I hope to find at a reasonable price. We get there and it is pretty busy but not as much as I thought it would be. We have a great time walking around, taking a few breaks here and there so Tess can feed Elle. Tess finds a few beautiful pieces of crystal and barters a good deal. I pick up a little square crystal sugar bowl with a cute spoon. It's 10.00 and Tyler buys if for me for Mother's Day. What a sweetie. I'm going to put some raw sugar cubes in it.
We have lunch and I decide on a toasted western on brown. It is pretty yummy I eat 1/2 the bread and all the egg. Water to wash it down. I see the poutine Ty is eating but surprisingly I don't covet it. Elle entertains us as we eat and when we finished eating she got to eat too.
The day ends with us not buying very much but we have had a great bonding time as a family and we will be back again as we didn't get to all the dealers - surprisingly. Tess ends up with the 3 pieces of crystal, some books by her favourite author and a sweet little silver aquamarine and diamond ring. I have the square crystal sugar bowl and a small silver footed vase with a glass frog. I wanted one since I saw something like that on Downton Abby. SCORE! Thank you Ty and Tess for the Mother's Day gifts. And for the awesome time together.
For dinner I feel like seafood so Drew and I head to Red Lobster. I literally have not been there since I was pregnant with Nick. We both order the baked seafood dish with lobster, scallops and shrimp. I am sure that is probably NOT on the can have list, however I do not eat the bread at all, I started with a salad and just eat the fish.
Tomorrow being Mother's day we will be celebrating by golfing with my youngest son. It is the annual Mother's day Golf Classic. This tradition started about 5 years ago and at that time Tyler also joined us. But times have changed and I cannot begrudge him spending time with Tess on her first Mother's day and also her mom who has recently immigrated here from Zimbabwe. That is life isn't it. We marry, we have children, we spend all our time and effort on raising them and then they move out and start their own lives. Now we can concentrate on our lives as a couple as we grow older. Being healthy and fit will certainly allow us that luxury.
Tomorrow - Golf and another pic :)

Day 13 - and its Friday....
Friday dawns and I'm up and at em. Breakfast is another smoothie. Today is Keith's last day leading this particular group and I'm already used to the way he runs the class. On top of that, after all, he is the motivator who got me "running"...lol.
Everyday there is a different lean to the group. I imagine they do that to keep you engaged and not bored. We start off as usual in zone 3 and over the course of the class he ramps us up to zone 4 (the run zone) 4 times with the last one lasting 5 1/2 minutes. I find my easy loping is around 4.1 to 4.2 but I am feeling the top of my left hamstring from the last class. Also, stupidly, I have worn a different pair of shoes. The ones I have been wearing are classed as walking shoes so I thought, since I'm a runner now, I should try my other shoes which I had purchased this winter. They are the red olympic Adidas and I like them but find that they are tighter over the arch of my foot due to the fact the tongue is attached to both sides of the shoe. Saying that, they seem to be tight enough to in effect cut off the circulation to parts of my foot and I find I'm running on numb feet. So... not doing that again, I guess I will stick to the walking shoes or perhaps seek out a new pair more suited to what I have added to my workout repertoire.
After the treadmill we are told to find a partner. Well just like high school I get picked last and lucky me I have Keith as a partner. We have to throw a friggen heavy medicine ball to each other. Catch and throw it back over our head. I get hit in the stomach and once in the chin but I got him back I threw it almost over his head. Then we take turns lying on a mat while the other one drops er throws the ball to them. We have a few giggles over that. That ball is pretty heavy when it drops onto your stomach! (Thank god I didn't toot.) We end with some good stretching over at the bars. Each day I exchange names with a new person. We are still all women and one man (Frances) and there seems to be more than 15 of us. I guess Monday will show me how tough Maria is compared to Keith - although Lee and Lynn have been saying Keith is tougher.
I try a different lunch today. I have a 4 oz piece of grilled chicken cut up into 1 cup of tomato soup. Also 1 slice of Bavarian bread with a few thin slices of hard cheese. It's quite yummy and more than enough food. For dinner I thought I would make a dish I saw on the Marilyn Denis show. I have to find shakiraki or something like that noodles. It is quite easy to make. The noodles are quite hard to find. I go to Oceans and after asking 2 or 3 people a young man tells me that they are yam noodles and where to find them. Yam??? ooh ok. So I find a bunch of different varieties and read the label on the back. They have hardly anything to them. No fat, no sugar, no carbs. Is it really food?? I follow the directions and make a yummy thai flavoured dinner with a few pieces of scallopini turkey breast, red curry paste, no salt no sugar peanut butter (ok, i didnt have any of that so I used less then the recipe - I will go and buy some on the weekend). Along with bell peppers and onion it cooks up really fast and is filling. Drew says he likes it and that is a good thing. It only took about 15 mins. Its fun but challenging to find new recipes that are carbless. That's a new word. I just made it up - feel free to use it :) Starting this at this time of year works very well for me. First off I am ready to eat salad foods. If it was winter that would be harder for me. Also my workload has dropped off considerably therefore having the extra time to spend at the gym. I don't have anyone to drive around to and from school or dance so I can concentrate just on what I am doing and eating.
I am not planning on going to the gym tomorrow. I was originally going to try and catch a yoga class or something before I meet up with my daughter-in-law. But plans have changed slightly and instead of me going there - which is quite close to the facility - they are picking me up around 10:30.
Tomorrow and Sunday - one blog about my weekend. Happy Mothers Day!!

Day 12 - New Picture and a haha
Thursday AM and I am meeting with Sara. I am on time for a change and she is running a little late. As I am waiting at the fitness desk Keith comes over and asks how I feel after my accomplishment yesterday. This is why I love this place, the people are so nice and caring. I laugh and say that I actually feel pretty good. No real aches or pains. He then looks at me and says - no lie - "so what are you going to do now that you are a runner?" What??? I am NOT a runner, I jogged for a few minutes yesterday and that is my big surprise to myself. He repeats "now that you are a RUNNER, what are you going to do now?" I should make a goal. I am stumped. Could I be a runner? or a jogger? Do I want to be? Is it a realistic goal for this over the hill, overweight grandmother? He seems to thinks so. And so I make a goal. He promises that himself and Maria will help work with me to achieve that goal. Oh god, what have I done? I have made a promise to myself that if I voice something or write something that means I will do it no excuses. Can anyone guess that goal? I am afraid to voice it here as it may seem ludicrous or a bit over enthusiastic since I've only just learned that I can jog at 4.0 mph. Or is that really running? Tell you what, if at the end of this month of May I am still able to jog/run and have managed to get some weight off then I will make an announcement regarding my goal.
Sara comes and saves me from running off (oh wait I made a pun) anymore at the mouth. We chat for a few minutes and then we go over my food diary. Amazingly she picks out that I am still carb loading at dinner time even though I thought I was making good choices. So many sneaky carbs out there. I figure she is weaning me off night time carbs. I tell her the funny story about being a "runner" now and we share a few laughs. I think I have a new line to start conversations with now - "Now that I am a runner" oh geezus. Sara gives me some breakfast ideas as the smoothies we are making are still too carby and not enough protein. She emails me some recipes as we are sitting there.
Now comes the next moment of truth. Me and my friend who like to hold hands. I get on and hold the wands and wait.....
Well - I have now lost 6 lbs total (was 190 now 184) And my body fat percentage has gone down again. It was 47.8 when I started and now it is a bit over 40 % Wow. That is awesome progress. In just 12 days. She hugs me, congratulates me and we arrange to meet to do some blood work (check my cholesterol etc.) and also our next nutritional meeting. Life Time Athletics does this testing as a complimentary service and to point out where my body works best at losing weight. I have to fast for 12 hours before. Not an issue as I've had this kind of testing done at my doctor's office. I hope the numbers allow them to help me.
I decide today will be a swimming day and hit the lap pool. I do 14 laps today mixing it up. Finish with the shower and head to the shop. Sara has said that the green machine smoothie may not be always the best thing for me so I skip that today and eat 1/2 banana on my way to work.
So here are the stats to date:
start 190 lbs 12 days 184
body fat percentage 47.8% 12 days just over 40%
waist 40.5" 12 days 39"
start not a runner 12 days a runner (pphhhtt)
I can feel the difference in my tummy area. I forgot to measure the other stuff (ie boobs and bum) so I will do those now and head from here.

Day 11 - Dun dun dun dun...arms
Morning routine is getting a bit better at home. Drew is still onside and makes up some smoothies for breakfast. I've packed a lunch and snack and my gym bag. They are in the trunk and I've moved the big f'n truck out of the way so I can just run out the door and hit the highway. I find if I do all this before sitting down for coffee and breakfast then he can't complain I'm ruining his routine. Lunch today is the tuna with 1 tbsp mayo, 1/2 cup celery and 1 slice whole grain bread. It looks like an awful lot of food. For snack there will be yogurt and granola (2 tbsp granola with hemp). I fill up my water bottle with ice water and head out.
Today I am a bit worried. First up is weight loss group and I'm thinking that I'm not going to be able to keep up on the treadmill as my calves hurt quite a bit the other day. Also Keith said we will concentrate on arms today and that is what Killer Kris - er Kris the trainer said we were going to do as well. Also I will have about 1 hour between and I am not sure what I will do.
I arrive about 5 mins late again. What is with me and not being on time??? I know I am not the only one but still it has always been something I have strived to do. It seems that there are a few more people in the group today and there is only 1 treadmill open in the immediate area so I hop on and start it up to zone 2 (2mph). Keith is a jovial guy and is joking around about how he is going to torture us today and then tell Maria about it so when she comes back she will be surprised. Since I have never taken class with her I am thinking she must be a lot easier to deal with. Not that Keith is difficult he just seems to really like the treadmill. We are given some long rubber band thingies with handles and just 1 towel today. After 3 or 4 mins he ramps us up to 3 for 4 mins then says we will do 4 for 3 mins. Ok I can/will do this. 3 seems really easy now and I am just starting to get into a good rhythm when he yells out zone 4 and up we go. Ok this is really uncomfortable and the bottom of my calves are burning already. How am I going to manage this for 3 mins. So I think, maybe I should "try" a jog. So...I did. And amazingly it doesn't hurt! And I can sorta do it - after all it is only 3 mins. After 2 mins though I poop er chicken out and put it back to 3.8 and walk fast. My heart is pumping pretty good. Keith takes us down to 2 and then we are gulping down some water as he tells us to grab the rubber bands and count out to 40 while pulling on the bands AND walking on the treadmill. Then 20 of another type of arm/band exercise and then another 20 all while walking and I am trying so hard to count, breath, walk and stretch. I have a hard time chewing gum and walking...geesh. Now I can feel the cardio really amping up. I have yet to figure out what my ideal (is there such a thing) heart rate for burning fat etc. so I am thinking has anybody had a heart attack on one of these here treadmills and how embarrassing would it be to have it push you out the end. Oh wait he's saying back up to zone 3 for 2 minutes and then zone 4 for 4 mins. Crap I don't think I can do this. But across from me is someone who looks just like me and she is doing it. She is pumping her arms and doing the fast walk. If she can do it I guess I can try. After 2 mins up we go to Zone 4 and I start to "jog". I say "jog" cause I am guessing thats what you would call it since on the media centre it clearly states 2 is walk 4 is jog 5 is run. So I am jogging, it doesn't hurt, not my hips nor my knees nor the lower back of my calves. My heart is a pumping away but I end up doing the full 4 minutes before I think to cut back. I am amazed at myself and have to say something to Keith. He congratulates me and high fives me as I tell him "hey I just jogged that and I have not jogged since - well since ever". Again at 2 we do some arm exercises and then he ramps us back up to 4 for 5 1/2 mins. Well I just did 4 surely I can do 1 and 1/2 more minutes??? I did!! I really did do it. I am so friggin proud of myself but when I check my heart rate it is 139. I'm thinking that maybe high and say so to Keith and he says well maybe. To finish the class off we do some exercises with some kind of exercise 1/2 ball on the floor and little hand weights. That is challenging as the 1/2 ball wants to push you off but I do find the situps or wait the new fangled name is ab crunches... they are a lot easier to do on that thing. We do some stretching out afterwards and class is finished. I am wiped. My arms are aching and my heart is just coming down. I think I am going to rest til 11. There is a small lounge with leather chairs and a large screen tv in the change room so I sit there and unwind.
At 11 I meet up with Kris - this time we BOTH have the right time - and I tell him I've done my cardio today and also apparently arms. He laughs and says you may be overdoing it. Is there really such a thing? I've got a lot of years of catching up to do. We head to the weight area and guess what? I'm doing squats again. Fart, my legs just seemed to be feeling normal. However, there is definitely a change in me cause 10 days ago I could NOT - although I did do them - barely manage 100 squats. I can't say I breezed through them but I do do them and my legs are not caving in on me. From there we go to a 4 sided piece of equipment that has a bench and some handle thing on it. He shows me where to put my feet and how to grab the handle and puts it at 45 lbs. ummmmwhat?? 45? I can't lift a 15 lb baby for more than 5 mins. But he says I can do it so I try. So pull back 45 lbs with your back straight, elbows in, legs straight, and pull it to your bellybutton while keeping elbows in and pinch a pencil between your shoulder blades. Think of all that? While in actuality I am thinking pull just pull...he keeps encouraging me and every now and then pulls my shoulders back for me. After the first set of 20 he explains what he is trying to do with me here. He has observed my posture and knows what I do for a living. My muscles are tight in the front as they are used to me hunched over a machine for up to 18 hours a day. They have to relearn to pull back so I can stand straighter and keep my balance centered. The muscles are fatigued and aching from trying to do that all day and it makes sense somehow but I know it will be a long process to relearn so many years of doing things the wrong way. He even says I may get rid of my sore back permanently! Maybe I will finally get that posture that mom was always trying to get me to do - stand up straight!. I do 4 sets of 20 and the last few really hurt my lower arms but I do it and hold it like he asks.
He suggests we do some hip rolling and shows me how to do that to help break down some of the muscle outer tissue to keep it from cramping. Its only a few but it feels good to do it. Afterwards we make another appointment for next week. I have one left that is paid for by Life Time Bucks and want to make the best of it. I mention to him about my results on the scale and that my Body fat percentage had gone down 5%. He said that's great but be aware that is almost for sure just water. Well I know that but it still is progress in the right direction - yes?? I hope so. He tells me to get something in my stomach as I have now been at the gym since 9 it is 12 and I've done 2 hours of pretty hardcore exercise. He also asks me what I plan to do the rest of the week. I don't want to seem like I am overdoing it (since he already said that) so I say I think tomorrow I am just going to swim and that seems to be the right thing. As I leave the gym I grab a green machine smoothie in the cafe (they sell it it must be good right?) the girl talks me into spinach (in a smoothie really? ok I will try it) and its not bad.
When I get to work I find I am not able to talk about
the way I feel. First off I tell Nick what I did today (the jogging) and the things that Kris had me do and what he is teaching me. He's supportive and gives me a good job mom. However, when Drew comes in I feel funny telling him much. He wants to know what I've done but something makes me feel like he will either criticize or belittle my accomplishment or do the oh you should do that or even worse I can do that. So I don't say much and shut him down. I realize that is all in my head. He can do that sometimes but I know I should be able to tell him what I've done but maybe I want to volunteer it rather than have him question me. Its a weird feeling - maybe I am actually embarrassed. Or I don't want to seem like I am bragging or exaggerating. I'm all confused by my thoughts and just let it go.
Tonight we are going to have quinoa salad and some of the grilled chicken. I like the quinoa but I think there is only so much I am going to be able to eat of it. Spinach salad on the side with balsamic vinegar. Its pretty good and we both feel full after. We spend some time over dinner talking about what I did today and how I felt. I told him I was worried about the heart rate and he agreed I need to find out where I should be. We have a few laughs and the rest of the evening we do our own thing. I have some cards I am working on in my crap/craft room. Here's a good thing to think about - I think I have reached this point in my life.
Tomorrow is Dietician Day again....and I think I will post an update:)

Day 10 - Already?? And I'm on my own
Tuesday is just another day of the week. Typically low key and routine. Not anymore. On the days I do not have appointments or group meetings I still fully plan on going to the gym. Today is one of those days. I stay until 9 at home and my husband has left for work so I head over to the gym. Traffic is a little better just past nine and I cruise there in 10 mins. I am not too sore from the group yesterday so think today, being my second full week at the gym, I'm going to start trying some classes. First I think yoga. However, it seems I need my own mat? My mat - that I've had for maybe 5 years has been doing non yoga duty as a shock absorber in Drew's truck bed. Yup you heard that right. His computer parts have been doing some yoga on their own time. It is not looking like something I might want to use for yoga class. Maybe for crawling under a truck but not for sweating while trying to force my body into some weird downward doggie thing. So I pass on the yoga class.
Heading upstairs I check out the TCX or something drop in class. They are sweating and working hard on what looks like a combo aerobic step and yoga mat while lying down and pumping their knees. Looks pretty hard core and already in progress so gonna pass on that. Pilates Fit is on in Studio 2. It is in progress as well, but I think I can slip in since someone just pushed past me to join. I follow her and see there are mats provided. Ok - I've done pilates at the Dorset Community Center drop in Wednesdays - ok maybe 3 times. But I think I can at least follow along. Surprisingly I do (or so I think) well and she comes over to adjust me only 1 time. However, the plank move is definitely a lot harder than it looks and my left arm starts to ache so I chicken out of that and do the infant er child move? You know where you curl into a ball and stretch your arms out like you are praying to the gym gods? For the most part I manage to simulate pilates and it is a good stretch and workout. My abs (or I think they are abs - do I still have abs? did I ever have abs? Do I want to have abs?) are aching alot and my left upper arm is sore. It seems my left side is way weaker than my right. Afterwards the instructor seems intent on trying to sign people up for individual sessions or workshops - not interested thank you I am just gonna do what I have already paid for. Overall I give pilates a thumbs up. I may just add that into my weekly schedule but I am still determined to try everything - alright maybe not that TCX or whatever it was class. To me however, pilates doesn't seem a whole lot different from yoga. They also have a pilates studio with machines that look similar to the rack but I may try that next week. May....
I am going to call it an early day at the gym and hit the shower, dress and blow dry but maybe I will check out the scale before I go. Seems like I haven't changed anything since I met with Sara but I do feel different and that means things are or must be working.
Have you ever noticed people in the change room? I know it is impolite to stare but sometimes it's funny. There is a large variety of ethnic backgrounds at this gym - which I think is awesome. But in the change room we are all women. With breasts, and bums, and hair. Some women are shy and change in the little corner change rooms they have. Some are like ok I'm just like you and I am going to change right here as quickly as I can. Others like to lean over the sink and stare at themselves in the mirror thisclose. I do not want to use that sink that someone's boobs have been draped over. I see some asian ladies that I never see actually doing anything but they are always in the change room chatting to each other and pushing by. Then there are the sweet ones. I find I like to try and say something nice to someone everyday. Doesn't it make you feel good when someone says hey that is a pretty shirt? So I pick somebody - anyone - and make a compliment. Surprisingly that makes them very chatty and for a minute you've got a friend. I've complimented on a cute bathing cap, a pretty bathing suit, the colour of someone's hair, the outfit they've put on to leave the gym. I've helped someone with tying a scarf and an older lady with undoing her zipper. I don't believe in pretending people are invisible. I am not invisible. I know people see me in all my 189 lb glory with my pink tinged hair and I see them in their beauty, their frailties and their strengths. I may not be smiling on the inside but I like to see people smiling on the outside. I see old people, young people, caucasian, asian, indian, spanish. They are thin, fat, athletic, arthritic and they are all here doing the same thing I am. Trying to beat the beast into submission. It will be interesting to see how many familiar faces I will see in the coming weeks and months.
After I leave the gym I do a quick stop at Longo's to get some salad fixings and other things on my list of ok's to have at the shop. I end up getting in around 11 and start my work day. Somehow I thought this would make me energetic and eager but some days, like today, I have a harder time getting settled into a work routine. Fortunately I am not that busy so it's not a big deal but I keep wondering when will that part kick in?
Tomorrow is Wednesday and I have 9am Weight Loss Group and at 11 am meeting with Kris the trainer - wish me luck! They both said arms.....

Day 9 - Monday Monday
Alright. Today is a big day. Weight loss class starts at 9am. I have absolutely NO clue what I am in for. I packed my lunch and snack last night and have my gym bag prepped and ready to go. I know that I have to make sure I don't disrupt my husband's morning routine too much (lol) or he will be a bit grumpy. We have our coffee and he makes us a smoothie. Pina Colada smoothie. A recipe I found online. Seems like it would be good for you - what's in it? Coconut water, pineapple juice, fresh pineapple, 1/2 banana and some ice. He blends it up and I like it he finds it a bit bitter.
I get to the gym about 2 mins late and they are already at it on the treadmills. So I try to figure out what's going on and Keith welcomes me by handing me 2 towels. "Its going to be a 2 towel day" he says. I'm like ohoh. So I turn the machine to 3.5 mph and start walking. After about 5 mins he informs us that we are going to go up to zone 4. What the hell is zone 4? Apparently anything over 4 mph and you shouldn't be able to speak. I have not done 4.0. Can I do 4.0? On the media display it says thats a jog. Oh great. I do not jog or run. Or I should say I can't jog or run. Anytime I've tried running to get even out of the rain my legs complain and I just can't do it. So I pull something out of the past and start to do the old heel toe fast walk (thanks Dad). I hover around 3.9 and 4.0 and manage somehow but the back of my calves are burning and my left hip is not liking it either. We go through some ups and downs from 2.0 to 4.0 and then he says time to do the obstacle course. Oh boy. Hurdles. When was the last time you did hurdles? Me it was high school. I wasn't a hurdler (see not a runner) I did long jump and high jump. Maybe relay if I was forced too. So lets see these hurdles please god don't let me be a dork and trip or knock them over. Well it wasn't that bad. I didn't knock or trip and it felt good on my hip. Basically it was an exercise to help open up the hips. And it seemed to work. There were about 12 people (11 ladies 1 man) in the group and they are all body types, races and sizes. I feel encouraged and look forward to the next Wed. meeting. And I drank all my water and used only 1 towel.
This meeting also included a group discussion with Sara the dietician. She was pleased to see that I had joined this group and went through what seemed to be a motivational and confirmation of eating habits. It was informative.
After that bit as we were leaving Keith informed me I needed to actually sign up for this group. And what do you know it is extra. However, I have a feeling this is going to be really good for me in many different ways and I like Keith (even though he is just filling in). So I figure what the heck - I will do this for a month and see what the next month is like. 3x a week 35.00/time. Costs are going up for sure it is not 4.00/day now but any regimen you undergo be it Jenny Craig or Weight Watchers there are always extra costs PLUS the cost of a gym membership. At least this way I think I am going to achieve my goal. And don't forget the towels and sundries in the change room :).
Goal 1 - lose 40 - 50 lbs
Goal 2 - get fit cardiovascularly, stamina wise and strength
Goal 3 - to be determined...
I truly believe that this will happen. You are my witnesses and motivation.
I'll leave you with this as it is the way I feel most days.
Tomorrow - another on my own day

Day 8 - Sunday
I'm not going to chronicle an everyday day. Suffice it to say we had a pleasant breakfast, went on a bike ride and then a nice dinner - which Sara has told me was overloaded with carbs and I thought I was being good. Crap.
What are carbs? apparently most of what we eat day to day. In vegetables the culprits are potatoes - regular and sweet - corn, carrots and peas. In fruit strawberries and bananas are the ones to make in small doses. Everyone knows pasta and breads are big carbs but the amount of carbs hidden in almost everything we eat is daunting. Later this week at my second visit with Sara she is going to explain in depth reading labels on food products.
I will post a picture and update as well.
Tomorrow I tackle the Weight Loss Group - oh god what am I in for tomorrow??
